10 min short films - 10 mins was max size of film for old cameras (anyone correct me), 'Rope' by Hitchcock used 10 min segments.

In this case John Lindsay short films such as the ones you ask about above, though he wasn't the only one who produced them.

the takes average 8mins in length and were intended to seamlessly fit together, creating the illusion of the film being shot in a single take.
an astonishing technical feat in its day but rendered somewhat redundant by advances in technology.
for the modern day equivalent in the scope of its ambition, check out "time code" directed by mike figgis - 4 single shot takes shown on the screen, simultaneously.

David Hockney - film he did for the south bank show - his montage technique must of used ? cameras? (or single camera with dif angles)
Andy Warhol - can't remember film -manhattan building or something over 12 hours?
Haven't seen figgis movie you talk of.

not surprised - it only showed in one small cinema in london for 2 weeks. if you ever get the chance though, catch it. one of my films of the year.
