Know it's a bit off topic. Pls forgive me for that..... but I need to tap into the minds of some of the greatest PC users. I can't find them so maybe you guys can help???

What it is - I am running AOL, but only as a connection, I launch IE6 as a seperate application and have had no trouble viewing and saving JPEG images - until now.....

In the browser a picture is displayed as a Jpeg extension, and also in the properties. However when I come to save it, it is dgiven the file extension .bmp. This is not negotiable in the drop down menu. And we all know how crap .bmp's are.

I have reset IE6 to the defualt setting - but this does not have any effect....

I have run out of ideas - anyone else?

im Running XP. When i setup my system straight from the shop it gave me a choice for default images etc. If you chose jpeg on setup it should automatically sve any images as Jpeg which my system Does but i do have the options to transfer to Bmap if i wanted to along with any other format i wanted.

As to help with you now when your up and running XP sorry i cant help you there. But i think you should be able to reset your defaults if you look in the: Control Panel, choose folders etc there is info there you should be able to reset image default there ...... thats what i have been told

Is this just one web site or all websites? Occasionally this happens with particular websites where the picture appears but when you save it has no filenmae and the extension is .bmp. I've got round it by giving the file a name, saving as a bmp, then loading the file into Corel Photopaint (or similar) and saving out as a jpeg. In this case the file was probably a jpeg originally, just something mysterious went wrong in IE as a result of the website concerned. Go to a different website a few minutes later and all is as normal.
If in your case it happens with all websites, though, the above is little help.
Actually real bmps are better quality but huge in file size as there is no file compression.

I believe that their is a 'However' to Alec's comment.

If the web browser has been instructed to save images in /bmp format, then it will merely translate the .jpg into a bitmap. There is absolutely no quality benefit in this instance.

True - to the quality point that is.

There are several reasons why this issue may occur.

1. This issue may occur if your Temporary Internet pages cache is full.

2. This issue can occur if you have "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" selected in Tools, Options, Advanced Tab and are loading the page over a secure connection (https).

3. This issue can occur when you connect to a Web site using an address that contains . For example, the server is accessed through http:///default.htm, instead of http:///default.htm.

Workaround for Cause 1
To resolve, delete the temporary internet files by selecting Tools, Options, General tab and select the Delete Files button.

Workaround for Cause 2
To workaround, uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" from Tools, Options, Advanced Tab. Then select View, Refresh to reload the page.

Workaround for Cause 3

Method 1
Open the Temporary Internet Files directory and locate the image that you attempted to save.
Right click the image and click Open .
When the image loads into Internet Explorer, right click the image and click Save Picture As . The correct file type and name should be correct.

Method 2
Type in the direct path to the image that you wish to save.
When the image loads into Internet Explorer, right click the image and select Save Picture As . The correct file type and name should be correct.

Method 3
You can also save the file in BMP format, and then covert the file to the desired file format using a graphics editor.

A MUCH simpler method (well works ok with Netscape) is to RIGHT click with your mouse on the image, which will bring up a menu giving a 'Save Image' option. Hey presto. .BMP files are large, but if you get a copy of Paint Shop Pro (given away with most PC magazine cover disks) you can open it, save as a .jpg then delete the .bmp

Yes that's an easy one. You need to delete your Temp Internet files. Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Internet Prop and delete.
