Been meaning to watch Last Resort for quite some time. I resorted to ebay as the film does not appear to be available new. As luck would have it, the DVD I received was like new.
?When a young Russian woman and her son leave Moscow to meet her fianc?, who fails to show up, she declares political asylum. Tanya and her son are sent to a dismal English sea-resort, Stonehaven, a place they call 'the armpit of the universe'.
The film was shot in Margate of all places.
Tanya (Dina Korzun) plays the part well of a young Russian. Alfie (Paddy Considine) is excellent as the amusement arcade operator. Les, credited Lindsey Honey (Steve Perry) plays the part of a small time web cam website operator, starring anyone he see?s fit to appear in front of a camera. In the case of Last Resort Les hits on Tanya. I do not know if Steve Perry is a good actor or simply playing himself, but his character (Les) was cringe worthy. His scenes felt awkward, and when he jumps on the bed to demonstrate what is required of the female(s), its humorous, and to some degree demonstrated that operators of web cam sites really only care about one thing, the punters they can persuade to part with cash.
Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, Last Resort paints a grim account of how refugees are treated in Britain. These people have virtually no privileges, no money, and no means of escape. They travel to the UK to chase a dream and end up trapped. A grim as it sounds, Last Resort is entertaining.
