I'm sure this question has come up before, but I couldn't find previous messages with a search.

The question: are DVDs from US mail order suppliers (Jaded, Excalibur, Gamelink, etc) playable on standard UK DVD players? If not, what equipment/modifications do you need?

I think I've seen somewhere that US porn DVDs are produced without 'regional' coding but I may be wrong.

I haven't even got a DVD player at the moment, but I noticed that US DVDS are sometimes CHEAPER than the VHS versions, so I'm thinking about making the investment.

I bought a DVD player and then searched the internet for a 'crack' to change the player to multi-region.

I found one and it gave a list of buttons to push on the remote whilst the DVD tray was open. This then led to a screen which allowed me to change to 'multi-region'.

It musted work as I have player 5 American bought DVDs and they all worked fine.

It means that I can buy the Euro versions when I know that a film was edited for American and but buy films from American when they don't need to be cut and are cheaper than buying in the UK.

Although I do urge you to buy British stuff from 'British Supported' suppliers where avaialble.

Thanks, I wasn't thinking of getting British stuff from the US, just American stuff that isn't easily available here.

I'm not very 'techy', so your advice sounds a bit beyond me. I'd still like to know if it is *necessary* to convert the DVD player to play American porn DVDs. I thought the point of regional codings was a trick by Hollywood film companies to stop people buying DVDs from the US before they are released in other territories, or buying them at US prices instead of local rip-off prices. The same motive would probably not apply to porn DVDs.

I thought I might as well mention while we're on the subject that I'm in Bangkok at the moment (!) where there are video CDs and DVDs on sale for bargain prices (4 quid for vCDs and 7 quid for DVDs). No British ones found yet and there isn't a huge selection but the best DVDs I've found so far, in my opinion, are Buttman's No Silicone Zone, Hustler XXX Video Magazine vol 5 and Nectar. Fellow Brits I've met who've been here before assure me that these are proper working DVDs and they are compatible with British players. If anyone fancies these or other American DVDs let me know SOON (I'm going on Wednesday) and perhaps I can buy some in bulk and pass them on when I get back (hopefully making a small profit!). I'll keep looking for British ones but I'm not too hopeful. Does anyone know the Thai for Georgette Neal?

You would be best just buying a multi region DVD player.I got a cyber-home model from WHsmiths for ?99 that i have played region 1 and 2 titles on fine(and VCDs)

If the DVD is not region coded it will play on ANY machine in the world.

If the DVD is region 1 then you will need to get a cracked DVD player. I got mine from

HOWEVER you should also note that USA DVD's (region 1 or non region coded) are generally in NTSC so you also have to make sure that your telly will do NTSC.

Most newer telly's do PAL and NTSC. In the worse case you will get black and white images. You can read about it here

If Region 0 don't worry as it will play on any player anywhere.

However beware if a disc is RCE (Region Code Enhancement). This is new from Hollywood to stop us importing DVD. No hacks work (yet!!) and a multi-region player won't work either.

It works by using the disc to check the player compatiblity isntead of the player checking the disc.

Region 2 is the pal region so you won't need a multi-region player.You need a multi player to play region 1.

All the DVD's I've ordered from the states (which have been alot!) have been region free. They will play on any dvd player.
