the extent to which 'principle' is guiding france's policy of opposition would seem to be debatable:

.......and the same oil logic applies to Russian 'principles'.
Neither nation has a particularly good record in respecting the rights of either individual or statehood, and both have been justly accused in the past of atrocities.

Happily there seem to be limits developing as to exactly how far US financial influence will go: see Turkey over the w/end, for example.
