dvd formats

Hi, I'm thinking of getting a dvd writer for the pc. Still not sure what format to get. Both DVD-R and DVD+R machines seem to be roughly the same price. Can anyone recommend one over the other? I've noticed that DVD+R media seems to be more expensive. Any reason why? I presume both formats can be used to play video on other machines or am I wrong on this?

Yes you are wrong on this. It depends on the player. Do a search on the Archive forum. It has been discussed before.

I have a DVD player which will play DVD+R but not DVD-R (or at least the only two I've tried so far) and another which will play SOME DVD-R (fortunately the ones I bought it to play) but not others and not DVD+R (or at least the only two I've tried so far). It's a minefield.

the sony dru500a is in short supply - I've seen the firewire version on amazon.co.uk -
sony seem to have RDR-GX7 coming out which is a stand alone recording deck and supports both formats (with provisos). Expensive ?850.

Just another little question about recordable dvd's...

Say you want to put a video tape onto a recordable dvd, how do you go about chaptering the dvd you have made?

Do you do it as you are recording the video onto dvd or do you do it afterwards?
