Would you die for porn?

We would all defend the right to enjoy using pornography. Some of us actively push the limits of the law. Others of us like myself, are not involved directly in porn production but are activists none-the-less for those who do, through various organisations.

How far would you take it, though?

Imagine one morning waking up to find that Bush and Blair had bombed and re-institutionalised every major country on Earth. Their power was so immense that they were able to put into place any law without paying attention to minor protest. Most of the inhabitants of these countries had been convinced one way or another that they are right and perfectly moral (as many do now) even though they are not.

Mr. Bush decides to erradicate immorality and after much persistent protest from supporters, re-exacts capital punishment for those who constantly break the law. Mr. Bush decides (as he does in real life) that he has God on his side and that immorality must be punished. Mr. Blair agrees with him. Those who make, distribute or consume pornography or support the sex industry in any way are terrorists to his ideal and so Bush declares a 'war on immorality'.

What do you do? How strongly do you believe in this? How far are you willing to push it?

Yes, I kow this is slightly ridiculous, I just like seeing my name at the top of the board. Still, would be interested to read any responses.

The scenario you paint has in part already be played

The Taliban

Most normal rights we take for granted were taken away

If your fundamental needs are being deprived then of course you would resist as best you could

I'd die for porn because it represents a major freedom of choice issue

IMO if all forms of porn(Vids,Satellite TV,Magazines) were removed from mother earth(impossible really) there would be a lot of frustrated people
walking the streets

If history teaches us nothing else it is that prohibition never works

The best example of freedom of choice exists in Holland IMO

If, instead of Bush and Blair, you use any of the ayatollahs, Capt. Hook and several other Mid East fundamentalists as the main thrust of your scenario, it doesn't seem quite as outlandish and far fetched. However, you would be in danger of antagonising the PC brigade and you would be deemed to be racist. Bush and Blair are the new Bogey Men and you can say what you like about them.
Dying for pornography is very dramatic, and if someone said to me that he/she would kill me if I didn't stop watching porn, then I am pretty sure that I would stop. I have a dirty enough mind to be able to handle that.
Dying for the unfettered freedom to view, read, listen to, think or do what I want to do is a different story. I would be prepared to join others in the fight for that freedom. I sure as hell wouldn't be prepared to go it alone!!
The sad part of it is that that fight would mean that we would be fighting for all the other sad bastards who want to stop us enjoying porn.

At a time when an unrepresentative, God-bothering git like Jonathan "The Lord's too busy helping me jump to do anything about important things like famine, disease and war" Edwards is appointed to a viewers' watchdog group just because he's a high-profile Christian, your scenario looks less like paranoia, Matt. As you might have gathered, I find the triple jumping jackass's holier-than-thou attitude and general Christian hypocrisy (he famously announced early in his career he would not compete on a Sunday; once he got the requisite amount of publicity to make him well-known, he fairly quickly dropped that---no doubt citing "God would want me to use my talents to show just what being a good Christian is all about" as his reason).

Porn is undoubtedly offensive to a good many people; it can corrupt, it can shock, and there is something almost seedy about it to the general public. But I keep going back to the argument concerning consenting adults. So long as that basic criteria is satisfied, the authorities shouldn't have a legal leg to stand on.

I certainly would not die for it, to do so would mean that THEY have achieved their objective in removing another blot from the face of THEIR humanity..
But continue to fight at every opportunity? a resounding YES.

Die for porn? Well, I would fight for the right to watch porn, but also for the right NOT to watch porn. Porn should not be forced upon people who don't want it. Sending unsolicited e-mails with links to porn sites should be forbidden. (In fact: all unsolicited e-mails should be forbidden...)

Buttsie, I think you idealize the Netherlands. Do you know there are negotiations about a new government going on? Do you know the Christian Democrats and the right-wing Liberals are negotiating simultaneously with the left-wing Liberals and with two small 'Reborn Christian' parties? These parties have only 5 out of 150 seats in parliament. The smaller of them even wants to abolish women's suffrage. According to this party a kitchen is the only place where a woman belongs. At the moment it looks like the left-wing Liberals will be the third party in our new government. But many Christian Democrats preferred the Christian fanatics. What exactly has been said during the negotiations will always be a secret, but how much I would like to know which concessions the Christian Democrats had in mind! I am quite sure a ban on porn would have been no problem. The Christian Democrats did never wholeheartedly agree with the liberal attitude towards porn this country has developed during the last thirty years.

I would get a crate of viagra, sell my house and convince the industrys top birds like Teresa May and LDM to do a hardcore scene like they never did before with anals and d.p's -hell why not throw in some watersports, and just before I popped my load scream: "Top of the world ma!" Before being shot down in a blaze of glory and into the annals of history as a martyr to the cause- Yee-fuckin_haaaaah!!!!

What a way to go out, I'd say.

A recent case in Queensland highlighted how undemocratic Australia really is

A Strip/Lap Dance club owner was charged with indecent exposure
In court a jury found guilty of exposure but said it wasn't indecent
Something along the lines of between consenting adults i assume

The government is now about to legislate so when they next raid the premises and catch a gile lap dancing and exposing herself they will get their conviction

Why bother with jury system if the government keeps changing the goal posts

IMO if this were in Holland it wouldn't have even got to court

My comments about Holland were in reference to drug laws & euthanasia
2 subjects that many countries put in the too hard basket

The right wing extremists hiding behind their christian labelled parties are a problem everywhere

Tolerance is the only way forward not repression

Agreed. I have an unquenchable hatred towards christianity, which is an abusive, divisive myth used to control the masses of deluded sheep that have blindly signed up to it. Ironically, they probably help keep the porn boat floating. Heaven or hell? There's no choice. Simply by not believing (and how hard is that) you can avoid all the Johnathan Edwards of this world in one foul swoop. See you at Bar 666.
