I used to drink Brown Ale or "dog" as it is known between the ages of 13 and 21 and I can say it has affects on the mind that other beers do not. Many of you will be familiar with the stories of the "Brown Ale Ward" at St Nicks Mental Hospital in Newcastle where many a casualty of this amazing concoction spend their time wishing that they had chosen meths instead.

Now my dad also told me that he used to drink it as a young man but gave up due to having horrific dreams after even only four bottles of it.

A mate of mine told me that these effects are due to a psychoactive ingredient derived from a plant. Can any of you boffins tell me if its true and what this plant is? I am sure it is not the peyote cactus from which mescaline is derived but the hallucinations and delusions encountered by regular "dog" drinkers are similar to those of mescal cactus users.

Its Ok Sandie I was born in Newcastle before I saw the light and moved away. So I can safely say they dont mind it being called "dog". No seriously its a great place. Even people from Sweden think so hence the huge number of Scandos wandering around saying "und ver will the Metro Centre be ja" to which I reply " same place as it was yesterday you loony herring eating git". Thats the famous North East Hospitality.

So I reckon the Geordie you spoke to was either confused or annoyed at something else you said.

Funny thing is that in recent years of drinking in pubs in the East Midlands, Derbyshire and Manchester it seems everywhere I go theres a Geordie member of staff. I bought a pair of jeans in Nottingham last year and a Geordie served me.

I did not ask for anagrams did I? I asked for the identity of the plant based substance in the stuff. You lot dont need to drink it as you are off your tits already.

Liz in my later years I lived in Manchester, Derbyshire (the most beautifull) countryside in the UK apart from South Durham/Teesdale/North Yorks)

But I am still partial to a good pork pie with egg in. Apparently the London bunch call it Grovener Pie. Southern wankers.
