To tie-in with the recent thread about Gangster movies, here's the list of '10 most influlential crime films of all time' according to Empire
magazine as published in a suppliment to today's Independant:

The Slience of the Lambs

Not sure about Lambs myself. Thriller, chiller maybe, even horror but it's a very different film to the others listed. Personally I think Lambs is a romantic comedy -
A) it's not meant to be taken absolutely seriously ('having an old friend for
dinner' etc), B) it's about Lector's attempt to woo Agent Starling in a courtly manner.

I'm also not convinced that it's such an influential film as such either

M is an all-time classic. A baby-faced child killer, Peter Lorre, being hunted down by both the police and the criminal underworld, whose business is being disrupted by the police investigation. Creepy, thought-provoking, and uncomfortable. The great Fritz Lang.

SOTL?????????? That film is not worthy of any positive list but SOTL. Crime??? That opens up a lot of other interpretations of the term does it not?

I think that the ed was desparate to get in in and rather streched the definition to suit. I think most people think of it as a horror flick.

Manhunter was a better film, with a less hammy Lecter.

Suprised that an all time classic, Dillinger isnt up there. Warren Oates finest peice of work. Also had an unknown Richard Dreyfuss as Baby Face Nelson. Pisses on Bonnie and Clyde!!

Empire seem to think 'influential' means we've all heard of it and accept it as a good example of the genre, rather than something that cut a path that allowed others to follow. I mean, where the hell were Rififi and The Killing, both originals, both imitated nigh-on endlessly?

laurence tierney played dillinger,i recall he took his girlfriend to a resturant and the guy made a crack about him,he went back another time and shot him.surprised no ones mentioned george rafts either
