I've seen the original but is the directors cut (3hrs 45min Ch 4 tonight) much better?

Woody is right, Das Boot is the second best German import to us after porn

That will make it the same length as my vhs (3hr20min). I was going to tape tonights thinking it might have extra footage but as you point out the adverts will acount for the extra time.
Its a brilliant movie and the unexpected ending is very dramatic after the tense claustrophobic atmosphere throughout the rest of the movie.
Many people were sadly put off Das Boot after seeing the American dubbed version which was much shorter and had terrible corny dubbing in cod Deutsch accents.
A great film. Strange that C4 have scheduled it for the middle of the night. Probably due to Big Brother [post self censored to save you the bother:-)] taking up the primetime slots.

If your original is less than 2hrs20min long then replace it with tonights version. There is a very cut and truncated USA version which is terrible.
And was the tv mini series shown on BBC2 a few years back at about 7pm just the directors cut split into episodes of 30mins?
Bearing in mind that 9 out of ten U-Boat crewman perished would it be fair to say they ranked amongst the bravest serviceman of the war? I might think twice about asking that question to some of the old boys in my local Royal Navy an British Legion Clubs!

The first 'date' I had with my now partner, was inviting her to watch the unedited full german version of das boot, while sampling the delights of hungarian wine(bulls blood) and she stayed over, f.kin unbelievable, I could have understood if it had been Sleepless in Seattle and Merlot!

The Director's cut of Das Boot is superb, new sound effects track, remixed and re-cut the TV versions that went out before this were all abysmal and completely ruined a great film. My old VHS the DC had a 'making of' and trailer too at the end. Does the DVD have this?
Would also like to introduce readers to a Danish film I saw a few years back, a bit like Trainspotting but not a self-conscious, parochial, pretentious and now rather dated caper, but a *real* film about drug dealers in Copenhagen. It is absolutley brilliant!
