The Vice

I've always enjoyed this programme, not as in getting perverse enjoyment from it, but with regard to it being a good drama with good storylines.

However, I found the feature length opener to this new series particularly difficult to watch, which I suppose it's meant to be in a way. I won't bore you with the details in case you're not interested but it basically dealt with prostitutes who are heavy drug users being used for cheap porn movies.

I'm not so naive as to think none of the girls who 'star' in porn do it to feed a drug habit, but I sincerely hope there aren't too many girls out there who get used this way .... however I suspect there probably are.

On the subject of tonight's show for those who watch the series, I was sad to see what happened to the female cop and the now ex main character, Pat.

The Vice is (or was in its early days) a brilliant series. Ken Stott who plays Pat is a good actor but limited to a certain style in the same way that people like Ray Winstone are. They cant play diverse rolls so get typecast.

I preffered the first series with the young copper Douggie who got drawn into the whole seedy side and became very heavily mixed up in the vice scene. David Harewoods character was a decent bloke in the early series but lately he has become a career driven pratt.

By the female cop you mean Cheryl played by Caroline Catz who was also a pc in The Bill a few years back. Shes not a great actor but she looks good.

As for the drug/porn element. Its worth remembering that the cases featured tend to be home made porno stuff linked to street prostitution. People making dodgy type porn for private clients a la 8mm starring Nicholas Cage and that sort of thing rather than porn made for commercial release that we are familiar with.

I also quite like the theme tune which is Sour Times by Portishead.

I agree with what you say about 'in the early days.' I realise the storyline relates to home made or possibly underground stuff, all I hope (repeating myself) is there aren't too many girls out there going through this sort of thing, but I'm fully aware there probably are.

I must be turning into an old softie 'cause I wanted a happy ending for Pat and Cheryl :-(

Did you see the episode about girls from the Balkans and East Europe being used as sex slaves in Soho? Thats based on real life. And its the nasty side of the sex industry. Girls get promised jobs as hotel maids etc but when they get here they are forced into prostitution by gangsters from Albania, Kosovo etc. The girls are here illegally so they are helpless. They cant contact the police as they will be deported and then targetted by the very gangs who sold them.

This stuff goes on all the time in London and the real Clubs and Vice squad have their hands full on that and leave porn alone as its low priority unless its kiddie or rape stuff.

So save your compassion for those poor girls from those places who are working in London under duress and blackmail as we speak. Thats the dark and nasty side of the sex trade.

I too wanted a happy ending for Pat and Cheryl but I didnt expect one. Lifes not full of happy endings despite the picture portrayed by American TV and movies. In real life often the good guys suffer. As did Pat facing a life sentence.

I remember seeing a documentary about real life stories of girls promised great jobs in UK and rest of Europe. Brought to UK even if they thought they were going elsewhere, forced into prostitution to pay off their 'travelling expenses.'

One girl who tried to escape the flat she was in had both legs broken .... then she was immediately forced to keep seeing clients. She eventually got out thanks to Police, thank god!

I'm only too aware there's an extremely dark, sinister side to all things adult related and that life isn't full of happy endings, just think it's a shame to think as I type this there are 1000's of girls out there having to do degrading stuff they don't want to. If someone consents to whatever and is happy doing it then fine, no matter what it is as far as I'm concerned, it's those who have to do it against will I feel sorry for.

Imagine how any of us would feel being kept in a flat to be fucked x amount of times a day.
