theres loads but some that are not mentioned much are ralph meeker,laurence tierney,zachary scott.
I know what you mean I honestly can't remember Laurence Tierney's name being bandied around until Dogs was made.
Not quite in the same league I suppose but Victor Maclaglen was always a hard man in the John Wayne films (She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man) but always seemed to be over shadowed by The Duke
