Just seen this film. I was amazed at the amount of Hardcore Porn in a mainstream film - ok it was french- but blow jobs, penetration and cum?

But with other films like Intimacy The pornographer and Irreversible (I think - not sure on this one) containing hard porn in them and only an 18 certificate given, do you think that the gap between mainsteam films and porn is closing and if so does this threaten the porn industry?

That Is a very good question with a lot of depth to It and one I am not able to answer.

The thing with all those films that they're considered 'arthouse' fare - and thus unlikely to be viewed by the majority of people out there. It's that old paternalism creeping in again. The likelihood of a 'mainstream' blockbuster featuring explicit sex? Still zero, I reckon. Also, in every one of those films, the sex appears to be a less than enjoyable experience for the participants. I can't think of a single example of an arthouse film where intercourse is shown as a joyful experience, and the people doing it are not portrayed as somehow 'damaged'. I reckon if they made an arty film about a happy, healthy, horny woman who goes around getting laid a lot (for charity, say) the BBFC would cut it to ribbons, and probably ban it anyway - just to be sure.

Try the film Betty Blue.
I remember seeing It a few years ago on channel 4.
The opening scene Is the sexiest I have ever scene.
I can't remember what much of It was about except
the sex scenes looked real (not porn like) even
though they weren't. There was a documentary
with It, I think done by Mark Kermode. The main
character "Betty" saying that people who saw the
film thought that the sex was penetrative sex,
which It wasn't, It was all acted, not that you'd
know It.....

I'll grant you that the opening scene in Betty Blue is very sexy, as are various other scenes in other movies, but they're not hardcore scenes - as you admit. I thought Ghostdog was talking about films containing 'hard porn', rather than simulated sex, so BB doesn't count. The nearest I can think of to 'joyful' explicit sex in an R18 is in some of the opening scenes of In The Realm Of The Senses - but that soon goes off the rails big time. And even in Betty Blue, it soon turns out that this gorgeous, sexually adventurous young woman is nuttier than squirrel shit.

One of the few films that I bought but could not sit through.
