WHY CAN'T WE BE POSITIVE

I understand the need for venting ones anger because its a natural reaction
Some things really piss us off but at the same time some things really turn us on...
."so why do we concentrate on the neagtive & not the positive given that there will always be both?"
I will say as an individual I'm a cynic(trust nobody but yourself) ...I would give my right hand to be an optimisit....I'm serious about that..before you ask...I've tried many remedies and it has worked in the short term but never longterm...maybe Bermuda is the answer?
cheers

Buttsie, there is no bigger optomist than me! but you have to vent your spleen sometimes in order to carry on being an optomist.
btw. Bermuda,s not all it,s cracked up to be, especially when your waliking along a deserted beach, and you come accross a discarded Mc donalds carton....

I agree with you Liz about the right to vent the spleen
I am not against people venting their problems but more in the way that they do
A forum to work properly should have ab open question as the topic
The example of Big Brother is perfect
Rather than saying in the header that I hate Big Brother I would have said Big Brother-Boring or what?
That says what I think without being offensive but also leaves the scope for discussion
I think we sometimes a lot of us forget that this is just a forum and not a chat line

"That says what I think without being offensive but also leaves the scope for discussion"
How is saying "I hate Big Brother" offensive Buttsie?
In all my rants, I've personally never seen this as a chat line, have to be honest!
I treat it like an O/T forum, and just that.

two reasons: fear and laziness.
the fear that thinking and acting in a positive manner could leave us open to the mockery and disdain of others.
and laziness, because thinking and living positively is harder work than simply demolishing the efforts of others.

I'd have to disagree Woody. The fear comment would suggest that we are conforming to a rule. In everyday society, that could be the case for some, but on the net, you can say and be anything if you so choose.
For some, there is less of a need to conform in the big wide web.
No matter what a person says or does, someone else will always be there to mock. It's sod's law that you can please some of the people some of the time....etc
I think a lot of the amusing rants on here are being taken way too seriously.
Most come down to momentary vents of spleen and nothing serious is ever meant from it.
Another point, is the oft needed humour injection. We can be cynical and slate with humour.
A continuous tirade of abuse is boring, but if someone can put the same tirade in a flow with a few expletives and some real sarcasm, then I'm down with that.
I don't think anyone on here really means much of what they say in a rant when the flow is there.
Perhaps a lot comes down to what we find funny. We already know that some of us like the Mayall, Viz style of humour and Roger Mellie has a lot of to answer for. Perhaps I can sue Viz?
Another thing; A lot of people only ever choose to open up and express themselves so openly, is when they feel comfortable withtheir surroundings and have a sense of familiarity.
Safe to say, this forum has done that. A lot of people feel comfortable with this place.
When I first started posting here, I thought it was gonna be a clique style house of homeboys, but I was pleasantly suprised to find that there are some real cool dudes and funsters on here.

Valid points, Woodgnome, but there is also the fact that the negative things tend to provoke a stronger, more extreme reaction. If something really gets under your skin, you want to scratch. Puppy dogs and flowers and the sight of a beautiful woman might make us think God's in his heaven and all is right with the world---but that is a feeling of wellbeing, and contentedness. It might last for some time, but we don't necessarily feel the need to share.
When something annoys or frustrates or brings down a red mist, the healthy reaction is to vent the anger. And as a species we find it easier talking about irritates than what brings pleasure.
Or maybe that's just me.

Even though we may have been here for quite a while this forum isn't our personal domain
There are people who happen upon us and there are those who lurk in the darkness
The over use of abusive/funny comments will no doubt scare many posters off
I go back to what I said before...a forum should work in a simple fashion
The header should be to the point without being biased IMO
If you wish to make a strong statement save it to after the header

PS Yes the negative get more reaction but thats only because our society is Fucked up.I always hold that unless you have something positive to say say nothing-doesn't always work

Liz, where in Bermuda did you see THAT? I can honestly testify that Bermuda's beaches are the cleanest in the world.........even Horseshoe Bay at its most densely populated!!
Bermudians are VERY proud of their beaches...............mind you, I've not been there since '94
