Oh, great: just as it's finally become apparent that most of these are unsafe convictions, what do the CPS do? Decide to prosecute even more un-evidenced cases.
Not that it's an easy conviction, or anything, oh and what a shame that no publicly-salaried (and richly so, at that) employee of the State (i.e us) won't actually come on the media to defend this disgraceful decision (to us, again)..............
The US suddenly seems a lot saner.

Regarding the not guilty verdict today re the three cot deaths in one family.
Blame the medical "experts". They are the ones who provided the evidence that was used to prosecute. The lawyers can only go on the medical evidence so if some professor says the deaths are not accidental the police and CPS are bound to run the case instead of NFAing it like they could have done if the medical boffins could agree that the deaths were in all probability natural. The docs as usual cannot agree on anything so they pass off their contradicting opinions as fact. Both sides have medical experts all saying different things. What a mess.
BTW I have not seen Newsnight so I am unfamiliar with the latest developements you mentioned.

But isn't it funny how the CPS seem to pick the ONE medical 'authority' who suspects foul play, rather than the 248 who say it's bollocks?
Like I said, let no man come between the CPS and an easy nick.........

Really do not know why this case ever got to court.....pity the poor man & woman not only to have three children die but to be put under suspicion of causing their death must of been too a heavy a burden to bear. Somebody has to answer some questions somewhere.
...yeahhh.....right.....

......bet you they won't.
My missus is now convinced there's something seriously awry with the Cambs. girls case (thanks a bunch, Ivan.....), and is mailing everyone she can think of.....
Still, I suppose it'll keep her off QVC for a few hours.........

You get the medical opinion that you *pay* for.
If the medical evidence used by the CPS was weak, then it's no weaker than possible as yet unknown genetic defects or hitherto undescribed metabolic diseases that leave no trace to be found post-mortem that were offered in defense.
The manipulation of medical and other expert testimony is common in UK courts, largley because both lawyers and jurors are ignorant of the relevant basic science and what is sound scientific methodology.
Sadly, it's in fraud cases where the use of court advisers is being considered rather than more generally, ie, money counts more than people.

I doubt that ANY doctor, confronted with the sort of adversarial nonsense seen in most courts, would be able to resist the tendentious lines of even a merely 'competent' cross-examination.
It's not about truth (of any sort), merely huge fees and the best advocate you can buy (and of course the Govt. can afford the finest).
Shitbags, and they never have to suffer any consequences for the lives they ruin: indeed, like Scarman and so many others, they are posthumously LAUDED for it.......

Derry I-seeing as we are speaking of untrustworthy"experts"I have a feeling that if the guy who wrote the mentioned theory was asked to be a defence witness the prosecution would take him down like a ton of bricks by bringing up the fact that he believes in all sorts of theories about shite that was discredited decades ago.He most probably thought the X Files was a documentary.I mean,Im reading the homepage where it is being presented as fact that the light aircraft crash in LA was a terror attack by remote control aeroplane.God knows how many people died on september 11th and how many planes crashed that we never heard of accordingto him.He even claimed that there were no arabs on the flight passenger lists.
Is an interestng read.Well,no more that in 90% of cases its rubbish but a good laugh.

But as for the cot deaths you can pay a scientist to say what you want and present it as fact.A recent"study"concluded passive smoking was relatively harmless. The government told their men what conclusions to come to regarding BSE.Most probably the same with GM food.

J..J,
I have to agree. This country seems to be comitted to punishing victims. I realise that children are a very important issue, but, should burglars have any rights, let alone equal rights?
One of my biggest fears is burglary. I don't care too much about the theft, but I have to face the fact that I could have to put my dog down because she took a lump out of the bastard that shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Why do the police seem unable to arrest lawbreaking assylum seekers?
These people are here at our expense and as our guests yet they seem imune to to most of the laws that we live our lives by.
Why is the NHS considering the refusal of treatment for the obese and for smoking related illnesses?
Not that I'm obese, but I'd rather not be fined for eating bacon and as a smoker I'd be happy to pay for private treatment for a smoking related illness as soon as the government stops taxing tobacco.
Why can't we go into Europe properly?
Because whichever government was in power would have to put up with enlightened views on cencorship, taxation of fuel, tobacco, alcahol and most other things that we pay through the nose for and all the other stuff that they would rather we didn't have. The taxation of our pleasures is largely responsible for our bouyant British economy.
Frankly, I spend a lot of time in Europe on business in various countries and outside the language barriers, I have yet to find a place where I wouldn't rather live.
Once people realise that we can still have a nice picture of the Queen on our Euros they wont make such a fuss and we can get in and get on with a sensible way of life.
I have always been a patriot, but this country is going to shit and unless things change pretty soon I'll be pissing off and it wont be to the U.S . These bastards (with the aid of Tony Blair) are responsible for making us the second most despised nation in the world. But, thats another story.
Not a bad rant eh?
Anyone like to add to that?
MAD.

Gentlemen,
I appologise for my last response going way off topic for what I genuinely appreciate as a very serious matter (I am a parent), but it seems to me that this is just another chapter in the decline of what used to be sensible place to live.
We now live in a world where people take Mc Donalds to court because their kids are fat! What the fuck is going on?
Anyone out there tried to adopt a kid in this country?
Forget it if you smoke or go to the pub more than once a week. Whatever happened to a loving home and the chance of a better way of life?
These days parents come under suspision for simply taking a sick child to their G.P or the hospital. Nobody seems to accept the fact that they are there because they care about their kids.
Marc.
