When I was about 13 or 14 my folks had a newsagents, so I got to see all the magazines of the day; Knave, Fiesta, Mayfair, Men Only, Carnival, and of course dear old Parade, which I think cost about 6p then. But funnily enough, it was one of those crappy American pulp things with a name like "Gals n' Gags" that finally proved too much for me on hot afternoon; a single photo of a model called Michelle Angelo stretching out on a sunbed. My first attempt with DIY ended in tears. I tried to put some shelves up in my bedroom aged 11 with my best mates Dads Black and Decker drill. MY dad saw us attempting to drill holes and I got a leathering for using power tools at an early age.
