Just out of curiosity - and knowing bugger all about computers - is there any way of estimating how many people read these pages?

Reading and posting are two differnt things. I estimate there are 60-ish 'regular posters' but read by hundreds more who 'like to watch'. Woody or Alec might have some technical way of seeing how many 'hits' from different URL's for a better 'estimate'

I would estimate about 10000 hits a day or possibly more.

I can remember that figure being mentioned by the Mods many moons ago

10K seems pretty correct. If you check at Alexa it seems to have a ton of traffic so that would be a good approximation.

But is that figure the whole site? I mean most people might just pop in and look up something on the database and not bother looking at the forum.

I wonder if there is a figure for how many visit the forums rather than BGAFD as a whole.

10k a day though is not that high, some sites hit over 200k, voyeurweb claims 600k

But do people visit just once & stay logged in, that been one hit or do people come in read a few posts go away again & then pop in again later to see how some of the threads have progressed....there for that been another hit......but it's still the same person therefore it does not add to how many people view this site, so therefore you will never know how many people view this site.......& that applies to other sites too. (Wonder how many times steve56 visits this site?)

roughly speaking, the o/t forum averages 1200/1500 unique visits a day and the bgafd forum, 5000.

bgafd.co.uk currently has a daily average of 18,000 to 20,000 unique hits. in the colder months this figure rises to 20,000 to 23,000.

over the entire year we rack up over 7,000,000 unique visits... which is why you all need to keep buying vids from yourchoice!

for trivia buffs: around 500 people enter bgafd.co.uk via the bgafd forum each day; a similar number via the forum index page; and 70-90 via the o/t forum.

as 'wink wink' points out web stats are notoriously flaky. with regard to our stats software, a unique hit can be the same person visiting us more than once in a single day but only if they revisit bgafd having left us for a set amount of time (what that is i can't recall). taking this into account, steve56 would undoubtedly count as a single unique visitor!

something else that can fuzzy the picture are visitors who originate via the proxy server of their isp. we get a lot of aol posters on the forum and the same is undoubtedly true of the site as a whole. afaik, there's no way for our stats software to distinguish these visitors one from one another.

as to what the overall size is of our usership is, who knows? if we average 20,000 unique hits a day over the year, is that figure created by 20,000 living, breathing individuals, or could the real figure be nearer 30,000, given that not everyone visits everyday?

personally, i think it's quality that makes for an effective, productive site, not quantity. yes, some porn sites generate huge numbers but how many of those have been generated by redirects, popups, or misleading links. and how many of those people will visit there again?

everyone who ends up at bgafd does so because they want to; because this is where the information that they require is to be found. it'd be interesting to know how many people who arrive here via google or one of the other search engines (and it's a lot!) make a return trip, or several. i'd bet good money that it's a higher percentage than for many of the 'high numbers' gallery sites.

anyway, it's just a hobby!
