I believe that AOL is actually a bastardised version of Internet Explorer Magoo, hence the tie up, almost positive that you can not dial up to AOL without using their software first.
hope this answers your question.

A useful group of forums are at
Just do a search under AOL
There are a few old posts regarding removal
Personally I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole knowing their agenda
is barring access to porn on the net anyway they can
cheers

I'm gonna say this one last time
Get yourself a Download Manager like Real Download-4 simultaneous Downloads Max from free version-middle right hand side of page
My connection falls out periodically thats life as a 56ker
Might pay you to go to and test your connection.
Sounds like congestion on AOL but this test should give you an idea
I'll reserve my judgment on AOL.
Past posts by individual experiencing problems might be their problems but I'm not betting on it
cheers

You should get rid of AOL mags, it,s a poo pile, imho. one thing!, if you do uninstal using their own uninstaller, go to start-find and type aol in the box, do a search, and delete every twating thing that says aol, also in the registry as well, it,s like fuckin Aol-ien, the fucka gets everywhere, I told you you should have used Tesco-net!, it,s cheaper more reliable and you can buy scampi from them! you cant get scampi from A O fucking ell can you?
However I,m sorry you have had the hassle, dump the fucka....you know it makes sense.

I have to beg to differ sorry guys.
I've beenwith AO(Hell) for 4 yrs now; first with dial up - which was admittadely crap - but now i've had DSL (Broadband) for 7 months and all is 'hunky-dory'. I pay ?26.99/m now but used to pay ?34.99/m for the use of a dial up number as well as DSL if ever DSL went down. (it never has)
Therefor, if necessary, you can sign onto the internet with AOL (N/B or B/B) without having to use their s/w, but you do have to pay a little more for the pleasure.
......yer, i know, its gonna fuckin crash on me now aint it !
