Recently, GREAT people of my era sem to be dying around me. Cash, Simone etc.
These were TRULY TALENTED people who simply stood in front of a mic and sang a song - from the heart. This is something that is not aloowed in this day and age of electronics/producers. Johnny once said to Jools Holland (on national TV) that his producer did not mind if it was a flat note, it fitted the ambience and so be it.
Their like will never be seen again, alongside Dinah Washington, Billie Holliday, Sinatra, Peggy Lee Satchmo et al.
If there is a heaven, they will surely be there -singing along to the accompaniement of Satch and the angel Gabriel.(maybe backed-up by The Duke, The Count, Benny Goodman etc. etc.)
These were truly great, natural musicians whose personal weaknesses were the subject of the gutter press of their day, but who gave immense pleasure to many millions of true afficianados and "man-in-the-street" alike.
They are missed, never to be replaced.
