So, i'm standing outside the studio, talking to a customer, when along comes the postie, gives me a handful of letters, all neatly wrapped in rubber bands, and scoots off. About ten minutes later, I sit at my desk, go through the post, and what do I find in this bundle? One of those "We tried to deliver..........but you weren't in" cards. Not in? He put them in my bloody hand. The idle bastard couldn't be bothered carrying anything heavier than an envelope, so he thought he'd get me to do his job. If I catch him in the morning i'm going to rip out his bladder. I'll be glad when they privatise it and sack the lot of them. Tosser

If they privatise you will probably have to collect your mail. Can't think why anyone should wish for more privatisation after shambles of Railways.

The trouble is, what gets lost in all the hype about poor service is the fact that the profitable parts subsidise the rural operation.
So, what chance a delivery to Auchtermuchty under the Brave New Privatised PO?
And do you really want to pay ?2 for a first-class letter?

as someone who has just had two dvds worth approx. ?60 go missing this month (despite them being sent recorded delivery) i've also had enough.

the service in my area is shambolic and was found to be bottom of the pile in a recent nationwide survey examing the percentage of successful deliveries achieved. no one was in the least surprised, as the local press is full of stories about bags of mail being found dumped in the local canals/cemeteries (always a favourite for some reason). every day i get stuff wrongly delivered to my address. it doesn't take a genius to work out that some of my own mail is landing on unfamiliar doormats. this dismal situation has been going on for years now...

re. services to rural communities - cross-subsidising would undoubtedly be written into any privatisation bill presented. asking middle england to fork out ?2 to get a letter delivered would be a wee bit of a political no-no. this principle applies to those utilities already privatised: gas, electric, water, etc.

holland and germany have successfully denationalised their postal systems without any major trauma - i don't see why we can't manage the same. the railway privatisation was a a political stitch up by a dying, malignant administration, undertaken without any thought of bringing tangible benefits to a long suffering public. it's not only russian oligarchs who became as rich as croesus overnight, courtesy of some dodgy dealings in a few choice, national baubles.

the postal service is more comparable to other once nationalised industries that have markedly improved their performance since being exposed to a degree of competition. does anyone remember how long it used to take to get a phone put in (mind you i still get burned everytime i see that most of my quarterly bill is comprised of the line rental charge...)?
