Learn from history

The old saying has it that he who fails to learn from history is doomed to repeat it. The First World War on Channel 4 has been revealing not just the situations of that conflict, but also the road map to where we are now: the Serbs, the Turks, the Afghans, the Kurds; Muslims being dragged into western imperial ambitions. Our global politics are the result of foreign policy decisions taken almost a century ago. The curious thing is that the US was involved in none of that stuff, but is now in it up to its armpits.
The entire 20th century was born in Sarajevo, and the midwife was a Serbian assassin. From that bullet came the rise of communism and fascism, the second world war, the holocaust, the atomic age, the cold war, the Middle East conflict, Vietnam war, and goodness knows what else.
Throw a stone into a pool and see how far the ripples stretch. . .
