This film is like The Sound of Music always going the rounds. The same goes for the Bond films.

Ah yes, Saving Ryan's Privates---that was the one where 25 minutes of sheer savage horror was followed by an hour and a half of bland cack, and Britain's contribution to D-Day was dismissed in a reference to that prick Montgomery. Just as well the US managed to capture that Enigma machine on the German submarine in that other movie, or the Nazis would have won the war.

Sorry, but Ryan had the worst sentimental excesses of Spielberg well to the fore. And apart from the Tom Hanks figure, anytime any of the other characters looked like becoming more than just a cypher, they were wiped out. I hated that film, mainly because---after the way it started---I had such high hopes for it.

Dead right about Saving Private Ryan. I know the US took a massive hit at Omaha Beach in particular on D-Day, but watching this is like we gallant Brits being airbrushed out of the war. The US military has always held a grudge against Montgomery.

I've never liked Kelly's Heroes ; I don't know why really. I think if it wasn't for the fact that Clint Eastwood was becoming big box office I'm not sure it would have the poularity it still has. They've got long hair and like you say, Donald Sutherland's character is not just too advanced for hippiedom but he's a bit previous for being a beatnik !

But The Dirty Dozen is the real deal. Fantastic cast, no spurious sentimentality, good acting and storyline. And the greatest hardman in films. Lee Marvin is the Daddy.

By the way, I saw the 1950 MGM film 'Battleground' late on satellite the other night. It's about the Battle of the Bulge and a US platoon holed up around Bastogne. It is fantastic.
