How is the porn situation in England?

Post by soljARis »

Hi, guys of the forum.
I am a Lombard (North Italian) guy that wrote on this forum just a couple of times in the past.
Next January I will probably move to England to do my job (salesman of swine farming equipment) there.
Since I am a big porn fan, like most of you, I would like to know how is the situation there concerning smut.
I know that porn became legal in UK just a couple of years ago, but I would like to know more about the availability of it.
Is it possible to rent porn tapes/DVDs in video stores, like in the rest of Europe, or is it just for sale?
In the latter case, where is it possible to buy?
Are retail prices similar to the rest of Europe or higher? Is it legal to buy from the net standard (no animal/SM/shit etc...) tapes from the USA/continental Europe? In case I order let's say some Evil Angel tapes from Holland and it is checked by Royal mails, will it be sized or delivered?
What if I have them with me when I travel from home to there or the other way around?

Are magazines like Private/Pirate etc... easily available at standard prices (12 Euros)? And where? Newsstands, libraries, sex shops?
Thanks in advance for any reply you will be able to give me.

You certinaly cant rent hard porn from any of the high street video chains like Blockbuster but there may be some specialist companies that offer this service.

Legally you can only buy from licenced sex shops, most medium sized towns in the UK have at least one - the quality, selection and prices range from OK to diabolical! The prices vary from store to store - I know for example the last time I was home and went to the sex shops in Belfast they were looking for ?40 (about ?60) for hardcore tapes which is ridiculous but best advice is shop around.

The questions the legality of buying on the net has been covered a million times on this forum but my understanding is that while its technically illegal to buy uncertified porn (which in British terms the European and US stuff is) the authorities turn a blind eye to it as long as the same genre of material is available in the UK as R18. This applies to both buying over the net and bringing them in in hand luggage from my experience.

Its not the Royal Mail you need to worry about, its Customs and Excise - a lot of the above will depend on where the goods enter the country as soon ports of entry are more anal than others so its a case of hit and miss quite often. However companies such as Your Choice post from within the UK so you dont run the risk of customs stopping goods but Im not sure if there are other European or US companies who do the same.

On the final ones on the mags you wont find them in WH Smiths! Again only available from sex shops or specialist box shops, have no idea about prices but last time I looked the thing I noticed is that most of the stock was old and not current editions but that may have changed

Hope this is of some use! I am by no means an expert so if anyone wants to pick holes in what I have said above please feel free :)

The same stigma that is attached to buying porn in Italy (and I,m sure it exists) applies here, you can go to a local boozer, ask for big John!....tell him harry sent you re videos (know what I mean), or you can go into a private shop (one in most towns) and wait until the streets clear before you enter, once inside the guy selling the films will be quite pleasant!.....for about a minute, if he thinks your going to haggle or waste his time, he,ll probably become abusive and aggressive, he will then try and con you into buying a 'bundle' of dvd,s/videos etc, which are as hardcore as you have ever seen, these he will try and charge you ?100 for, and hope you will haggle down to ?70, you think you have a bargain, he is happy as a swine in shit because he,s sold you some rubbish.
As far as libraries go...........I,m afraid it,s harry Potter or Delia Smith, same goes for newsagents.
So the final option is this wonderful site!, here to the left you will find all the info you will need to satisfy your porn needs, also the forumites on here will be happy to discuss trades, purchases etc, after 3 months of working here you will also quickly discover that N.Italy is paradise compared to the UK, and promptly catch the next plane home, this would be the sensible option.

Dear Lizard, thank you for your reply.
I suppose you are someone who does not like that Europeans come to the UK and you are trying to keeping me home.
Do not worry. I am not stealing the job to any englishman. I am coming there are as part of a joint venture between an Italian company (the one that I already represent) and an English one. They need a an experienced salesman to trade their products in England. These products are equipment for swine farming. So I am not coming there as blue collar/waiter or whatever other kind of salaried worker. When you are an agent you create the environment in which you work, so I don't think it will be hell for me, particularly because I work much better in your kind of weather than in the absurd one we have here.

As far as porn goes, you may be right.
Where I live there is not that much stigma attached to porn, since all the local videorents (either big or small) live almost solely on porn and it is normal to discuss about new stuff with people you know. So, until now I had only to drive a few kms to arrive to the nearest videorent and find something interesting only for a couple of Euros. Videoshops here rent both mainstream and porn in the same place, so you can not tell from outside what the customer is going to pick up. AFAIK it is like that in the whole continental Europe.
And anyway, for those who are ashamed of asking "Un-natural Sex 5" to their videorent clerks, there's always the automatic rental machines.
Also, around here porn magazines like Private are sold in each and every newsstand.

You tell me that in the UK is different and I will find stuff only in sex shops and for very expensive prices. Fine, this means I will purchase through the net. I am not going to miss a good business opportunity because smut there is harder to find and more expensive.
And I can always compensate with real sex, since my experience is that English lassies are much easier than my local ones (who never fuck at first date).

Hi soljARis
i thought i'd also offer some advice on buying porn in the UK as I would say that in the time since porn has been legalized over here I have got about 90 DVDs (some videos too but mainly DVDs), I have always found it quite easy and hassle free to buy stuff. You've obviously been given some worst case scenarios by others, but I haven't really ever experienced that sort of thing. I'm not going to promote online ordering over going into sex shops or vice versa (if you look through the archives of this forum you will see that sex shops in this country get a pretty bad reputation, I can see why but it's just never happened to me), I'll just tell you how/where i've bought things in the past.
As far as sex shops go, it depends on where you are going to live, London, I'm assuming is the best place to go for sex shops. Soho has a small area where there are nothing but adult shops, maybe twenty all in one small area. Between these shops the choice is pretty good, I would recommend only visiting the bigger, more established looking outlets such as Harmony, The Soho Original Bookshop and The Private shops, a lot of the others I simply find looking for specific titles difficult, products can sometimes be randomly placed on shelves or hidden underneath other titles, stock may not be so up to date, and yes, you may be ripped off more than elsewhere.
The bigger shops that I listed have more choice, more current titles and DVDs for example can be bought for ?20 on average, although many places offer small deals (eg. 3 for ?50). Most of the people that work in these shops are perfectly pleasant and willing to offer advice if needed.

As for online ordering, the same applies, if you stick to the more established companies, such as those listed in the links section of this site, you will rarely get a bad deal. Some of the companies i have used and would ercommend are:
Vidshop
Blissbox
Orgazmik
Bluestardvd
Excalibur
Simplythebestdvd
Yourchoice

Some of these are based in the UK, others in the US or in Europe. Although a lot of companies ship products from abroad (holland seems to be the main source) I have never had any problems with customs opening or confiscating stuff, although I have never ordered anything too extreme like pissing/fisting/shitting etc..
Prices vary but again, expect to be paying anything from ?15 to ?30 for a single DVD, but I wouldn't pay any more than that.

I hope this helps, as I say, its not all bad here. Good luck!

Far from it Sol, you are welcome to come here! though why you would want to is a different matter, I,m just pointing out the porn situation! unless you buy from an online retailer there is not much choice apart from 'private 'shops who will generally rip you off, I hope your job goes well here and that you enjoy living in the UK.

If you are ever in London try Soho. Lots of sex shops selling mags & DVD's. Best to shop around though! Prices vary!

Some local newsagents do sell US Hardcore mags, but they are not cheap! Never buy a DVD from a newsagent or garage, they will mostly be the softcore version!

Do not at any account pick up a copy of The Daily Sport & look at the ads for cheap DVD's! Once again these will only be softcore!

As others have stated your best bet will be over the net. If you order from abroad they should be fine unless they contain scenes that are banned here in the UK, i.e peeing etc... these WILL be nabbed by customs!!

So welcome to Britain & have a nice time here.

I buy exclusively online from the UK, with hardly any problems: prices are about 25% higher than the Continent, on average, but bargains can be had.
Enjoy your stay- and our women. I certainly enjoyed some of the signorinas and signoras I met when last I sampled the Amalfi coast.
