Crowe is magnificent and quite happy to administer a slap when needed. How he deals with a wife-beater in the beginning is great

yes thats right,thought the bit where he smashes the chair uo from the floorboads was great and kimi was looking great as usual,some good one liners eg who the fuck are you?,im the ghost of xmas past,and de vitos dialogue when being tortued by that dudley bloke was good.it was all good.

And fairly true to the spirit of the novel, in spite of jettisoning huge amounts of the plot and changing the ending.

it has a great soundtrack too incl kay starrs wheel of fortune,and bing crosbys the positive my fave bing record not a big fan,loved sinatra though.

It is a great movie and one of the few recent (last 30 years or so) Hollywood attempts at film noir that have succeeded on all levels. I think the others are Chinatown and Body Heat.

All recent efforts I believe show a direct lineage from Billy Wilder's 'Double Indemnity' from 1944 and Edward Dymytryk's 'Murder My Sweet' (known in this country as 'Farewell My Lovely' with ex- WB crooner Dick Powell) from 1945. The latter is the best adaptation of Raymond Chandler on film.

In LA Confidential, all the acting is really top rate. But Crowe really stands out. One of his fellow cast members on 'Master and Commander' said of him apparently 'the guy's a full-on wanker' but he is supremely watchable. He is tremendous in 'Gladiator'.

At the risk of sounding a complete fogey, he is one of the few actors around today who can act and command the screen as many Hollywood actors (Gable, Cooper, Peck) did in centuries past.

His new film will be one of the few that Mrs. WillieBo and I shall go to see this year. Now where's my kia-ora ?

Yes. He was superb in 'Kiss Me Deadly' from 1955 where he played Mike Hammer. Very underrated and played a US captain in 'The Dirty Dozen'. What happened to that thread ?
