OBE's

Once upon a time, an OBE meant something, but these days, any cunt seems to get one. I refer of course to Beckham, who is undoubtedly a brilliant player and a role model, but an OBE???????????
I have no problem with him getting one if England won the World Cup or he retires with the dignity and aura say Bobby Charlton had.
I see Trevor Brooking is VERY well respected by all football fans and see he hasn't got an OBE

Top politicians have always given 'gongs' to celebrities to make
themselves look good, and make them seem one of the people.
Look at Harold Wilson giving them to the Beatles.

In the past some politicians have even sold them (Gladstone was
accused of this I believe), and Thatcher gave them to her cronies
in the press.

There are a few 'headline' gongs, but there are hundreds that go
to 'ordinairy' people every year that hardly get a mention, they are
the important people.

A lady who lives near me (now in her seventies) has run a dance
club for children/teenagers for years, and does regular charity
shows. She got an OBE a year or so back, and well deserved.

Many of her dancers have gone on to professional careers in the
business, all thanks to her. These are the unsung heroes.

I much prefer the 'common people' awards, the unsung heroes like lollipop ladies and charity fund-raisers (NOT fucking Geldof)

Lloyd-George was actually selling honours---or are at least accused of doing so.

OBEs are a sop to the masses. Knighthoods the preserve of senior civil servants (for whom it is an expected perk of the job), political sycophants, and extremely popular actors and/or entertainers that will ensure good headlines for the PM of the day when they are bestowed. Oh, and occasionally the people who actually deserve such an honour---world renowned scientists, for example.
