Why are there no decent cafes anymore, where you can get proper food, like egg, bacon chips sausage and beans, with 3 rounds of bread for ?1.50.
Now it,s all poncy squeky clean coffee shops that charge ?2.50 for a cuppa, and they dont even sell fuckin toast, the staff have lost the recipe, I prefered it in the old days, when a guy could go into a caff, slip on the floor and twat yourself because of the grease, pick up a sauce encrusted copy of the sport, and await a good fry up, served by a hatchet faced pig frightner, wearing a pound of make up, who called you chuck! your food was served with a pint of tea in a dodgy mug, and the guy sat next to you was a second hand car saleman called john..........
Where did it all go wrong...

There are still a number of 'greasy spoon caffs' around that will do a good fry up........they live off builders. First thing in the morning they go in there for a good hearty breakfast before going off to the building site.

The old road side caff has long gone.....you have to thank the motorways for that. Now it's a Granada service station selling stuff at rip off prices. I know only of a couple of road side caff still up & running. These are like stepping back in time with their yellow wall paint, old posters & steamed up windows.

See plenty of trailers or cavavans offering a cuppa.

There's a good one here in Wellington - the original Eva Dixon's not the slightly poncy one in Miramar. I was in there 2 years ago at the time of the premiere of LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring and all 4 Hobbits and Legolas were in there having a late breakfast. All the other patrons were pretending they didn't know who they were.

It all went pear shaped with the rise & rise of the Multi-National food chains

Why go to a diner when you can just sit on your fat ass and pick it up on your way to work through the drive through

Add on the preference by the health experts for Cereals over greasy Cooked breakfasts and its little wonder the Diners are gone

A little bit like the small Green Grocers & Butcher shops...largely swallowed up by the supermarkets

cheers
B....OZ

PS The best thing about a greasy breakfast consisting of 2 eggs,2 pieces of toast,1 steak, fried tomato covered in pepper & spinkled with cheese is that despite the obvious bad fats over all it is healthy because I like it-the power of the mind is what the health gurus never factored into the equation

Just like the benefits of eating chocolate in moderation

Buttsie is correct about Multi-national chains, but the main demise of these sorely-missed cafe's is the strict hygiene standards that the local Environmental Health enforce that small greasy spoons cannot afford to maintain. Once upon a time, these cafes had health hazard all over them, but we didn't know what cross contamination was so we ignored them and blamed a dodgy tummy on a visit to a local wog house/ Chinese Takeaway/ Heavy drinking session (Delete where appropriate).
Now the public are very concious of health and litigation, chances are small cafes shut up years ago instead of risking a huge fine for serving contaminated food resulting from bad storage/cross contamination/out-of date diary products etc.
You can still find them, but have a look at their fridges/servery/work surfaces, all immaculately cleaned and sanitised.
