I'm watching Smokey and the Bandit, and I'm curious as to why the transporting of Coors from Texarcana to Georgia would be classedas bootlegging.
And yes I do still like this film from when I first saw it when I was about 6 years old.

I think the states have their own individual licensing laws - I seem to recollect it is or used to be an offense to take a bottle of booze across some state lines. I could look it up but then I could pretend to be a smartarse....lol

In some states where drinking alcohol is allowed it is illegal to have an opened bottle in your car. Bimmercat will confirm no doubt.

True, I was visiting an American friend in New York State
and he was very careful not to show the bottle if he was
having a beer in the car.

That has to be a good thing all said and done. I think their tollerance on drink driving is spot on and something this country should look at. I have NEVER driven whilst drunk or even slightly tipsy. Who else can HONESTLY say that?
