Maybe so, but I won't be dictated to be a bearded Welsh transvestite with caterpillars running free on his forehead.

He's as well howling at the moon for all the difference his remarks are going to make. FW appeals to the same braindead tossers that buy the tabloids for the latest scandal involving so-called celebs, while skimming over the occasional paragraph of real news involving some disaster in a faraway, non English-speaking country. ITV, with its nasty, dumbed down output, is just the televisual equivalent of the Star or Scum.

I agree, every one is more interested in the tittle tattle & not on the real issues, perhaps every one is fed up with their lives & use the 'brain dead culture' as an escape!!

Question is where does it all go from here?

Does every thing desend lower & we are fed a diet of celeb this, celeb that....more stories of footballers who don't know how to behave in public etc?

Prime example: last item on BBC News just now---Princes Charles and William on a skiing holiday. So FUCKING what?!?

Will little old ladies in Buxton be able to sleep safely in their beds knowing that the heir to the throne is having a well-deserved (!) break? Is the BBC innundated with phone calls from Morpeth inquiring as to whether Beckham will be in a movie? And do the good people of Fort William stop each other in the streets and exchange info about who Jordan (sorry, Ms Price) is sleeping with?

Excuse me, the men with the butterfly nets have arrived, and the nurse is ready to wipe the fleck from my mouth.

The point you are rightly making Caratacus, was illustrated even better on Friday. Dr Williams' predessessor, Dr Carey had, in Rome, made an intellectual criticism of Islam. Much of what he said was what millions of non Muslims and many Muslims think. It was headline news on Radio 4's 'World at One', yet by the evening it was totally ignored on Channel 4 news, which is usually the best bulletin of all.

Just a minor point, Caractacus, as you're obviously on the ball. You're right to criticise ITV for its dumbed down agenda, but the vile Footballers Wives was dumb in its inception - there was no 'down' to it. The more worrying lapse is happening to the News and information shows. Witness the new slick Six O'Clock News and that new graphics-heavy ITV 10:30 fiasco. Both simplified to the nth degree, both leave you feeling spoonfed and condescended. Then there's If... an intriguing premise ruined by melodrama and, typical of much 'infotainment' these days, overly flash camerawork to cover up how under-nourished it all is. We've always had dumb TV, but when the clever stuff isn't as clever as it could be - and perhaps should be - you know something's seriously amiss.

I'm in full agreement, Last Word. I tend to stick to the Channel 4 News if I'm in, but even that has its own agenda.

Not meaning to sounds as shallow as the ITV schedule, but the only thing the 10.30 news has going for it is the extremely pleasing on the eye Felicity Barr.

If he'd made the speech while appearing with Ant and Dec, he'd have got better coverage. How long before some genius at ITV works out that people would watch the news if those clowns read it out?
