Sadly Ustinov has died, apparently as a result of an infection picked up in Thailand. Strangely I will mainly remember him for a brilliant recent portrayal of William IV in a television programme about Queen Victoria.

A man of great wit and wisdom:

In an interview with Reuters last year he said: "I was irrevocably betrothed to laughter, the sound of which has always seemed to me to be the most civilised music in the world."

He also said he had decided on the epitaph for his gravestone - "Keep off the grass."

If anyone could be said to be a citizen of the world, it was Ustinov.
