What do YOU remember most about your fathers parental skills?
A) His love and understanding?
B) Being your 'best mate' in your teen years?
C) His stubble and whisky breath?
D) His belt buckle?

jeez, some of this post is somewhat depressing in a way. I can't imagine how it would feel to only remember my dad in some of the bad things above. My old man's been dead for a while now but I only remember good things, I did and most of my mates still go for a beer with their old boys on a regular basis. Just shows the world can be shit at times.

The pathetic shit left when i was eleven weeks old,and there has not been a visit, telephone call or card since.I have never felt the urge to track him down through feeling incomplete or not knowing who i am(i leave that to those who appear on the Trisha show). As far as i am concerned he is dead.

I'm so sorry Heron, it was cases like yours that made me determined when my own marriage broke up that no way would I lose touch with my kids. I was able, with the help of my dad, to buy a house 2 streets away from them and they had their own room and front door keys. And we still have a very good, strong relationship.
My dad and I were good mates and I introduced him to foreign travel when he was 86 and we had 8 trips before he got too frail and died shortly before his 97th birthday.

I didn't used to like him much. He was too much an authoritarian figure but then again most dads were back then anyway. We've grown much closer since I left home and I catch myself sounding just like him now - especially with the things I say while driving " Oh you fucking dick-headed shit wit "
