Is this something you downloaded from Kazaa or something similar?

The 'dat' extension is used by many programs and is usually short
for data.
The web site gives details of all extensions.
If it is a file that Kazza was downloading then this is the file
extension it uses while downloading the file, and it then
renames it to MPG or AVI or whatever when it has finished.
So if you have one or more DAT files in the your Kazaa directory
then these are files that have not been fully downloaded.
Kazaa should convert the file extension when it has finished.
Kazza can sometimes leave DAT files lying around if it does not
tidy up properly, and if they have been there a while they can
be deleted.

AVIPreview will allow you to watch .dat files asa they are downloading.
It's worth a shot..unless it's a dat to a piece of software in which case it's bollocksed.
