Shorter Oxford Dictionary - a prison, a reformatory. After St. Bride's Well in London near which there was a prison.
There's a reference in Congreve's The Way of the World -
FOIBLE "Oh, that ever I was born! Oh, that I was ever married! A bride? Ay, I shall be a Bridewell bride. Oh! ... ".
Found with the assistance of google. It's a long time since I read this for A Level and I'm not sure precisely what it refers to, but see -
