dunno off the top of my head, but I got a coupla mates in the forces, ones been in for 30 years one for one year, the older one is from the north east so between them we should be able to find out.

Shorter Oxford Dictionary - a prison, a reformatory. After St. Bride's Well in London near which there was a prison.
There's a reference in Congreve's The Way of the World -
FOIBLE "Oh, that ever I was born! Oh, that I was ever married! A bride? Ay, I shall be a Bridewell bride. Oh! ... ".
