Nik Kershaw lives in my village which is probably the least cool claim to rock'n'roll fame anyone can any ever have for their abode. If I ever mention that in conversation I always follow it up with, "The Prodigy and Gary Numan live nearby too" to dig myself out of the shit.
Nik Kershaw is still prone to big himself up from time to time. A mate of mine works in the village butcher's shop at Christmas time and one year the great man himself came in to order two turkeys and then went to walk out of the shop at which point the butcher said, "Hang on mate you haven't told us your name" to which Kershaw turned 'round and glared at him. They didn't have a clue who he was and, quite incredibly, he expected them to recognise him.
Kershaw tales like these, of which there are many in the local area, always remind me of the bloke from "Creme Brulee" in "The League Of Gentlemen."

Passengers by U2
I used to think these Oirish lads were good, even through their dodgy Zooropa stage. Someone got me Passengers which was U2 with guests and it stank, REALLY stank.
Mind you, fine return to form with 'All that you can't leave behind'

Yes he is shaven-headed these days but I've only ever knowingly seen him once and only then it was because someone pointed him out to me. He must have been pretty astute with his earnings though as his house is massive and really cool. Gary Numan also lives in the area and his house is pretty modest and, in comparison to Kershaw, he seems to have taken the other alternative to hair loss and has invested in a big black rug that sits precariously atop his head! All the locals that know him say he's a top bloke though and he's certainly had his moments musically.
As for the other North Essex boys made good in the world of rock'n'roll I've never seen any of the Prodigy personally but there was someone tooling around in a Ferrari F40 recently that I reckon was Liam and I've seen groups of German fans in Braintree presumably trying to find where they live!
