It's hard-pushed to be in the top five Beatles albums. Very short album as well. Worth buying if only for the peerless A Day In The Life.

I,m sure the surviving members of the Beatles will be gutted to hear that steve, and there they were thinking it was a concept album, and ahead of it,s time.

I think Pepper needs to be judged as more than just a collection of
tracks.

At the time it came out:

a) it was the first single pop album in a gatefold sleeve.

b) The name of the group (Beatles) is nowhere on the sleeve, which is
quite a risk even for the Beatles.

c) It was one of the first albums put together as an album, with tracks that
seque into each other, almost unheard of at the time.

d) its production level is amazing, and it was all done on 4 track.

e) There are good tracks: Day in the life, Within you and Without You
(which I think is brilliant), Little help from my friends, Lovely Rita and Getting
Better, but I have to admit that Revolver has a better collection of individual
songs.

It is sometime difficult to understand the impact the Beatles had unless you
lived through it.

Much 'art' that seems revolutionay at the time is now commonplace, for
example Stravinsky's the Rite of Spring was booed of stage when it was
first played, and is now considered a mainstream classic.

Yeah, but Rite of Spring has been considered a work of genius for some years. Pepper was thought a masterpiece at the time, but is looked upon now as a lesser Beatles album. The production is fantastic (you missed out mention of For The Benefit Of Mr Kite and the wonderful She's Leaving Home), and the sound fantastic. But some of the songs were just not up to the best The Beatles could produce. Revolver, Abbey Road, Rubber Soul, the White album and even Magical Mystery Tour can be seen as superior.
