I heard it was a 'mercy killing' and I initially thought, awww married for 68 years and freed her from suffering, BUT then I see he claimed 'diminished responsibility' and slit her throat. Turns out she was 'ill' but not terminal.
Should be sent down IMO........100 years or not, it didn't sound as much as euthinasia as first thought

there is a school of thought that says what's the point of prosecuting someone this age, with the public cost involved, when he'll only live a few more years at most anyway!
obviously, justice must be done, or seen to be done, but surely that has to be balanced with what's in the public interest.

.....which is presumably part of the reason a non-custodial sentence was imposed.
I think a little too much has been made of the 'throat-cutting' angle- take an old, desperate man without easy access to the chemical means to ease his wife's passing, and omit the tabloid sensationalism, and you're probably nearer to the real truth of the situation.
