The Butler report
But did we expect anything different given how the Yesmen are handpicked for these enquiries.

It was set up to be a whitewash , the Butler said when he started yes M'Lud , I wil not find any blame. A lot of effort has gone into giving slippy little Bliar the tiny bit of wriggle room he needs with all that slime he oozes , and one way this has been done is to break down the enquiries (4) into little bits and then only talk about minute details taken out of context that you can obfuscate . Looked at in the round , we needed the oil Dubya decided to get it , we went trotting along at his heels and suddenly we were part of a new one hit wonder group called "Coalition". If you blew the whistle that we had no substantive case you wound up dead in a wood in Oxfordshire .
Some of you guys on this forum like the way G Brown is running the Treasury , if he is still there next year and not in no 10 , please think who is in the package with him b4 u vote !
So , yes I am really pissed off over this , if anyone actually reads down this far ?

Lord Butler was actually more critical than many expected. However it would clearly be better if any future enquiry was chaired by someone likely to be rather more outspoken.
It is perhaps necessary to ask if Sadaam did not have WMD's, was the war still justified?

Yeah, I'm sure it was a whitewash. But like, who apart from John Snow (Channel 4 News) The Guardian and BBC journalists gives a toss?
What folks are concerned about nowadays is the Chav problem, the nanny state, ID cards, the erosion of civil liberties and plummeting standards in video porn.
I mean, did 'Mrs Smith' accost you in the supermarket this morning and say "Ooh, Mart, I had to get out of the house and speak to someone. Did you see the Butler Report on TV last night? Isn't it awful? My fears are confirmed, a government cover-up. I didn't get a wink of sleep all night fretting over it, and it's put 'Mr Tiddles' (her tabby) right of his 'Felix' - Mr Tiddles knows a wrong un? when he sees one and he's never taken to that Blair chap.

I do.
I don't really care if the distribution of knighthoods is a little corrupt,
but when they construct porkies to wage wars then I am almightily pissed off. Not that I personally believed their stories, but then I am an old cynic.

Not sure I agree about plummeting standards in video porn - I thought they had already reached rock bottom in the 1990s; no more room for continuing plummeting.
I do mind the nanny state, but I have nothing against ID cards. Rather have them than to bring my gas bill to prove my identity (I should perhaps point out to non-Brits that this isn't a joke).

Perhaps not in the supermarket, but it's the sort of thing my colleagues and I may well chat over lunch, now that Euro 2004 is over.

Suppose it depends on the war in question. I didn't mind Saddam and his henchmen getting ' a shoeing' at all. In fact it kinda put a spring in my step. That fucker was taking the piss, thumbing his nose at us, thought we didn't have the bottle to sort him out. We wiped the grin right off his face though, and in the process sent an unmistakable message to any other third world knobheads not to fuck around with us, or else. But was it worth goin' to war just to scratch that particular itch? Well, with hindsight, probably not, but that's easy to say once the offending itch has been scratched.
"Not sure I agree about plummeting standards in video porn - I thought they had already reached rock bottom in the 1990s; no more room for continuing plummeting."
Yeah, things took a dive around 1995, but since 2000 and the relaxing of the R18 rules, I have been aware of an even more precipitous downward spiral.
ID cards: Are inevitable, but... Do you want to be an individual, or a number? Do you want to be catalogued as property of the state? Do you want to make it easy for 'them' to make you jump though their nanny state bullshit hoops? Do you want to make it easy for them to dictate to you, to oppress you and silence you? ID cards will make it all the easier. Oh, I know there's the "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to fear" argument, that 's trotted out by those who either have not thought through the implications or are content leading boring beige lifestyles, devoid of aspiration and self respect, having decisions made for them and imposed on them. Not for me, I like to suit mi self. Anonymity makes it that much easier.
"Perhaps not in the supermarket, but it's the sort of thing my colleagues and I may well chat over lunch, now that Euro 2004 is over."
Then you'll be working in the public sector, the media, or maybe a white-collar job in the private sector? I doubt very much whether Dave the dustbin man or Bert the buss driver with be wringing their hands over the Butler report.

Apparently the Beeb cancelled a Norman Wisdom film to cover this, so it's alright by me.
