It's The Who for me, but only with Keith Moon as, in my opinion, he was VITAL to the band. Funnily enough I've just started a new topic with a Who reference! I should be working....

Waterloo Sunset is the finest pop song ever written....imho ....and Ray Davies is a genius...only Lennon/MacCartney, Jagger/Richard, Bowie and Dylan can claim to be more talneted.

Hard to choose, but I reckon The Kinks just have the edge cos of the depth of their work, The Who's catologue is great but they're over-rated slightly as an album act.
Both superb between 64 & 75, patchy since then.

RetroDon is correct, its a close call..........both piss on The Beatles IMO.
Ray Davies is a GREAT songwriter, as is Townshend. I have both Greatest Hits and for me, The Who edge it.......just

im not a big expert on either, but i would said that The Who were more about originality, brilliant personalities and musicianship than about tracks like My Generation
The Kinks however lacked that but had genius pop songwriting, and a shit load of tracks of that level....and ive never sat and listened to their albums but i know looooads of songs

From the intro to Baba O'Riley, you're hooked. A classic album.
