I don't want to get in to the Depths of the Data Protection
Act, because we will get off topic very quickly. Interested
people can get more info at:
but in summary
- It applies to private businesses and government
organisations (with some exclusions)
- It applies to paper based, as well as computer
records.
- It requires database owners to ensure that data
held is accurate and relevant.
- It allows individuals rights of access & ammendment
to personal details held on them.
The fourth point is particularly important to the likes
of you and me. The third point, for database owners,
is what might cause the laws to be described as petty!
As the BGAFD is regularly ammended for accuracy and
as the publishers respect the wishes of girls that are
listed it is adhering to the last two principles
of the Data Protection Act and is therefore unlikely
to fall foul of that particular piece of legislation -
particularly because personal details (like age,
address and contact details) are not available.
