Re: mp3s
They last as long as the song they are based on - if the song is 3 mins so is the mp3.
The main benefit of using mp3 is it compresses the audio source without any noticeable loss in quality - for example I have a song on my HDD which is just under 7 mins long. In wav format (used for "normal" music cds) the file is 70.1MB in size but as an mp3 its 9.53MB. Within mp3 there are different compression ratios but the normal accepted quality is 128kbps which is deemed to be radio quality or 192bps which is CD quality. The above example I gave is 192bps so if u reduced it to 129 or even 96 you could make it even smaller again with no massive loss of quality.
The main benefit of this is you can now fit say 50 songs onto a cd which you could only fit maybe 12 on to before BUT the cd player has to be able to play mp3s (most DVD players will so if u have a home dvd player u are sorted).
Tracks are available "illegally" via any file sharing network like kazaa or torrent but also now available legally from itunes, napster and coca cola etc amongst others.

Re: mp3s
I think the illegal owning of mp3's is disgusting.
It simply adds to the whole piracy problem and shit.
By piracy problem, I mean the bit where disgusting pirates run out of blank disks to burn the albums onto.
I mean I have 388 albums which is disgusting as I have bought far less cd's than is appropriate.

Uh? I admit I do not "Get" this mp3 lark. What's wrong with just buying a regular cd? What am I missing out on? Likewise those gay little iPod things, do you really need your ENTIRE cd collection with you every time you go out? A classic example of the wanky media telling us what we MUST HAVE to be cool. Likewise "Sat Nav", for fuck's sake read a map, it's not hard! Mobile 'phones with video recorders, 8000 ring-tones (ALL shite) and Playstation games...get a life instead.
So is this mp3 thing what Metallica were getting so worked up about? They dared to speak out that they thought it only fair that they be paid for their work. How dare they! Fucking good luck to them, at least they showed that they had some balls for a fight.
Would YOU do your job for free?
I'm not ranting at anyone in particular, just this whole media fixation of telling us what is cool and what isn't, what we need in our lives and the sheep-like zombies who buy into it.

Re: mp3s
Er... is this the same RudeBoy who I recall running around, waving his shiny new iBook in the face of anyone who'd pay attention?!!!!!
You've changed your tune (pun intended) Paul!

Re: mp3s
How on earth can a computer which even the most staunch luddite would admit has it's uses be compared to something as utterly poncey as an iPod?
So when did you ever see me, running around as you put it, with my laptop computer? I'm a little spooked as I don't recall ever meeting you and somehow I just know I'd remember such a moumental event!

Re: mp3s
You'd be surprised what I know about you. Very surprised.
And as for an iPod being poncy, well, that's very subjective, isn't it? Surely anything which makes listening to music (and have you bought your Marillion tickets yet?) easier can only be described as a good thing.
And as for MP3s, well, AAC is better, in my opinion, but if there's one thing I really loath, it's a stereophile who wants to hear every creak of his plinth.

Re: mp3s
Don't need tix for Marillion as me pal plays guitar!! Didn't know THAT did you! Mind you the friendship might become strained as I'm going to see Rush instead on Saturday but, hey, first Rush tour in 12 years and all that! If my ageing body can stand the pace I'll hopefully see the marillos on Sunday for a two day rockathon.

That is extremely scary but seeing as you don't work for the Inland Revenue I'll sleep peacefully. Be a good sport and do tell!
Anyway I'm gay, broke and I wear a wig. There it's all out in the open.
