Interesting article in this fortnights issue of real magazine on "Mourning Sickness" and how people publicly mourn over people who have died that they never even knew.

The article states that maybe it is done for purely selfish reasons thus makes the person grieving feel good about themselves and mentioned the pilgrimages to places like Buckingham Palace and Soham.

Reminds me when a girl walked into my local and burst into tears she was asked what the matter was and screamed "dont you know Princess Diana has died" people were all like yeah we know its sad, now shut up and let me get on with my pint.

We've discussed the Diana business a few times. What uspet me most about the public wailing and gnashing of teeth was it made every other death at the time, and for months either side, seem unimportant. People unable to grieve properly for their loved ones because their loss was so apparently insignificant compared with the national catastrophe.

If this country ever had an Emperor's New Clothes situation, it was with Diana.

Sounds interesting, does the magazine have a website?


I seem to remember a few years back that BBC2 showed a programme that featured people who had lost close family or friends on the same day that Diana died.

Quite interesting to compare their real and genuine grief with the morons who travelled to London to throw flowers in the street.

Yeah I think Mother Teresa died around the same time and only got a tenth of the attention. I actually didn't like Di that much - I thought she played the public like a fiddle. But when the funeral was on I got quite teary ! I'm not a bleedin poof but.

What really winds me up is the minutes silence at football, for someone neither connected with the club or the game.

But a minute's silence at a football game can be genuinely moving - the silence of anywhere between 20,000 - 60,000 people is incredible.

I remember being at a game a few days after the Dunblane incident and there was a perfectly-observed minute's silence.

People shutting the fuck up for 60 seconds is quite nice.

People balling their eyes out and leaving flowers to rot in the street in memory of someone they've never met is pathetic.

But thats just a piece of theatre, if anything, it cheapens the respect you're supposed to be paying. All thats going through the minds of 99% of the people there is "I hope my mobile doesn't ring."
