you need the right codec(s)
take a look at
www.divx.com, and you should be able to get what you need

It's not the avi files it's the player. Normally avi files will play on RealPlayer which is available as a free download but tweak it afterwards as it always wants to launch itself towards the RealPlayer site when you are connected to Internet.
Again you may need to download some extra codecs for your Mac player but there are other (suggested previously live DVX) which are independant players, and that plays avi files.

As a Mac user who had the same problem as you have, here's the answer:
1. Download the DivXPlayer for Mac from this address (ithe download is about 400Kb):
http://users.pandora.be/divx/macdivx1b10.sit.bin
Extract the player using Stuffit Expander.
You will need Windows Media Player 6.3 for the DivX player to work (will not work with WMP 7 & and above!)
This version of the player is also time-expired, but if you put your Mac system date back to sometime in Feb 2002, it should open OK.
The best way to use it is to open the DivX player, go the the menu and select DivX doctor. Select the avi file you have downloaded and you will then be asked for the name you want to give the converted movie. DivXPlayer will convert and you can then play the resultant movie.
And that's it :0)
