I don't want to deprive anybody of little pleasures but do you need this kind of liberalisation of gambling? I'm glad I don't have to even think about whether I should vote for a party like the present New Labour.

Re: Casinos
Once upon a time, I used to frequent an excellent private casino now sadly gone, it was real class. Strict membership, no shit allowed to register, I only got in because I used to do doorwork next door at a top night club.
It reeked with class and upmarket gamblers, the buffet was always top-notch and hostesses were stunning. A past Match of the Day presenter was a regular, but a real bastard to the croupiers when he lost money, which was often.
I visited another casino about 3 years ago and it was shit, lots of flashing lights, fruit machines banked up at every space available against walls, the felt on the tables were ragged looking with cigarette burns in the carpets, croupiers had visible tatoos and tacky jewellery, prostitutes mingled with gamblers and street gals hung around outside. The buffet was dried up sandwiches with shit fillings and limp salad garnish that was past its best, and the gamblers were rough and ready piss heads......a far cry from the previous casino mentioned.
Most new developments like football stadiums will have these now, it is guaranteed revenue, but I won't be going, I have a feeling they will all be like the 2nd casino I described, tacky Las Vegas instead of upmarket Monte Carlo

Re: Casinos
Amen to that Ace
Casinos started going downhill when they tried to broaden their base of LOSERS by lowering the dress code and Poker Machines were granted to Pubs,Clubs & Community Groups
Once upon a time if you were wearing jeans & a t-shirt you stood buckleys chance of getting in...Nowadays your in if you have money to lose
Not surprising given that some Casinos are losing money hand over fist to the high rollers so they need the common man to prop them up...even the Aussie Mega casino Complex CROWN recently posted a record loss
To answer your question Mart
Gambling in general is destructive to Society
Sure problem gamblers are only a small percentage but its the loss of revenue to Community Charities that is the killer
Go to any pub, club or casino during the day and you'll see lost souls sitting in front of Poker Machines pouring their Pensions/savings into it hour after hour
cheers
