Is there any reason why R18 vids
can't be made available to rent?
With tapes ?20 to buy , ?10 to
exchange (in London)its expensive
to make a mistake . With an
overnight rental of say ?3 I'd
probaly spend as much or more, and
buy the good ones to keep! Seems
to be available in other countries
,why not here.

hey're available for rent from the local porn shop around here. Whether they are legally allowed to do this is another matter. Anyone know for sure?

Well I am here in New Zealand currently living and working, and guess what they rent R18 no probs. To make it even better I have a video store 5 mins away that is the size of Heathrow Terminal 4! (Ohh ok not quite that big!)

lots of licenced sex shops rent out R18s, I can't see why there would be anything illegal in it (although obviously only licenced sex shops can deal in R18s to begin with, so you're not gonna see Rocco's Best Butt Fucks turning up on the shelves at Blockbuster quite yet). The reason it hasn't really taken off is the security element - a lot of people aren't prepared to give their local pornatorium all the personal information and ID required to open an account, and leave a blank cheque (security deposit) kicking around. That's why the half-price exchange system started - effectively long term rental for ?10 on a basis where neither shop or customer need worry about being ripped off.

im new to posting here and as a non rip off orientated adult shop owner hope that occasional posts will be welcome, golostruda sums up perfectly, you would not believe how many ways some customers try to stitch us up, probably had enough of the likes of sullivan and take it out on everyone!

'lots of licenced sex shops rent out R18s'.
Do you mean the ?10 exchange ,as I haven't
seen any doing overnight rental.
Actually the exchange system started a long
time ago with the unlicensed shops. With
legit dealers I don't see why there should
be problem doing a normal rental,as they
should (hopefully ) be trustworthy.You
could make the deposit in cash and just
use a receipt . Or for an account, same ,but
not necesarily using real name etc.
Just some ideas!

"I'm not a lawyer but..."
I don't see anything in the Video Recordings Act 1984 to prevent rental of R18s by licensed sex shops. The Act talks about 'supply', which includes 'supply by way of sale, letting on hire, exchange or loan' (section 1(4)). 'Supply' of R18s by licensed sex shops is legal, 'supply' by anyone else is illegal.
But surely there would be practical difficulties with overnight rental? At present licensed sex shops are rare, and unless you live or work near one it would be inconvenient to return vids the next day. Also, it would be difficult to get the full benefit in one evening! Most vids have four or five scenes, and if you can wank five times a night you're a better man than I!
As I've suggested before, what we really need is for Blockbuster to get licensed sex shop status. Then they could rent R18s out for 2 or 3 nights, at a price of say ?5, which would be good business for them and would create a much bigger market for porn.

As far as am led to believe it is ilegal to rent 18R the act talks about sales over a counter on a licensed premises and does not enter hire, letting anywhere, I can ask BBFC next time I speak to them,
