can you reccommend a site where i can download an effective firewall for free.i have looked in lizards locker but to be honest there are so many sites in there i am not quite sure where to look and in the meantime i am getting attacked by viruses left right and centre.thanks in advance for your help

as everhard says Zonealarm is about as good as you can get but I doubt it will help with viruses unless you are getting confused with what the problem is - if its viruses then a good anti virus program is vital as well as extreme diligence on the part of the user

As Everhard points out, there are many free or trial version firewalls, and if you are using xp, it has it,s own firewall that you can turn on/off, which is quite effective if you keep it updated, but if your getting virus, trend micro,s online virus checker is pretty good, takes a while to load the engine, but worth it, once you have d/loaded it, it will work quite quickly then, the link is in everhards post.
Just remember to delete all the virus it finds, dont attempt to clean them, they wont go away...

thanks everhard i downloaded zonealarm and it looks quite good.i had a firewall for about 3 years called systemsuite netdefense and it was fine until the other day it went mad and wouldnt let me connect to the net.i use AVG for viruses.thanks to everyone for thier help

I'm surprised no one has mentioned spyware. Check Lizard's Locker for Ad-Aware and Spybot. You might also consider installing Winpatrol which warns you if something new has been added to your startup menu. There's also which does the same thing as Winpatrol . Its freeware and although it doesnt give you a warning like winpatrol it does give you more info.
