Once again: can any of our more technically-minded visitors tell me, in plain English, how to wire up my Panasonic VCR to a DVD player and record DVD to VHS?
I'm sure it's esily do-able, but I'm a complete barbarian in these matters.
And others.........
Also, will VHS-SECAM inevitably only play on PAL in b&w?

Unless your DVD player has been modified (macrovision disabled, more specifically) your recordings will be distorted, in the same way that recording directly off Sky Box Office would be.

As for connecting the two together, you only need to route the DVD audio and video out to the input channels on your vcr (I think!)

VHS-SECAM: It actually will depend on the VCR itself; some models will convert the signal automatically, but that's something you'd have to ask Panasonic UK.

That's the best I can offer, I'm afraid!

DVD to video. Should only need to connect with a scart lead. Set the video to AV and press record.
With Secam i think you are stuck. Have tried many things myself but always b&w

My crappy Tesco DVD player has a macrovision disable code - you can find these handset entered codes on quite a few websites - suggest you enter the make and model of your player onto Google and check out the users' groups and websites.

Yep, for Secam you need a standards convertor I'm afraid. They are pretty expensive and tend to be used by pros only.

do a cheap secam/pal converter. Its only a little thing (oo-er mrs). I can vouch for the company as I have used them before and they will refund you if you return anything for any reason within 7 (or 14?) days. Which I did.

Got one of their cats knocking about somewhere. I can hunt it out for you. If I am not back in 12 hours send out a search party. Its chaos at Magoo Mansions at the moment. I may be some time.

Re: DVD ro VHS, the Macro "Video Stabilisator", legally available in Holland & Germany for around 80 Euros will do the trick (do a search on Google).

Some of the more expensive VTRs from the likes of Thomson will play back SECAM as well as PAL/NTSC.

Scart lead connection is all you need. If dvd has macrovision you can buy a scart that will disable this, from sonel.com, price ?29.99 post free. As for pal-secam, depends on your telly really. On some tv's the pic will be in b&w. Mine is multi-standard & will play any region, but if you need a converter, Lektropacks are pretty good as in another reply to yr posting.

But what exactly IS Macrovision, and what does it do?

Macrovision is a way of ensuring that if you attempt to copy a DVD to an analogue system (eg VHS) the signal is distorted.
