You'd be wasting your time

A far simpler solution...tape everything you want to watch and give those pesky adverts the fast forward blues

I'm certain that Equity (and the technical unions) aren't happy. Once upon a time, the credits would roll at a stately pace, and you could try to recall who that person was with three lines in The Professionals. Now, the music hardly starts before the screen is cut in half to display what's up next while a list of names whizzes by faster than the eye can see.

As for the freeview ads, Dead Ringers got that right: it's incessant, like a dripping tap, and you think you won't give in but you will.

The programmes are utter crap, on most channels---but they are all aiming for the same audience, the celebrity-fixated brain donors who, when asked by a national newspaper recently what type of programme (sport, news, drama, reality TV) should be cancelled, called for an end to documentaries.

Oh, and ITV's coverage of the tsunami disaster has been awful. Individual reports are fine, but the charisma vaccum presenters have less gravitas than Tommy Boyd on Magpie in the 1970s.

And while I'm on a rant, whose bright idea was it to have Martin Shaw play Adam Dalgleish in the PD James stuff? The voice is patently put on. Roy Marsden was perfect.

Given that my TV is downunder I'm probably spoilt
2 free to air Government channels with adverts only played between the shows. The TVs still crap but not as much as the 3 commercial channels that have adverts running at about 50/50 especially with old re-run series

Nothing is for free....like it or not adverts are what pays for the shite programs

Unless you're pushing a reality TV show, preferably involving telephone voting on a premium rate, or a vehicle for Ross Kemp/Robson Green, you've no chance. Your average programme scheduler aims for the sort of viewer who thinks Jordan is really, really interesting.

Telly has always been a case plucking a few precious jewels from a mountain of manure. It's just that the gems are proving more difficult to find now.

There is a rule/law governing just how many minutes per hour can be adverts.

If you've noticed, over the past couple of seasons, the Sky football has kicked off at 4.05pm to allow them to get an extra ad break into the hour, as they have to go a whole 45 mins without one.

Count yourself lucky, there isn't any such rule/law here in NZ. On the other hand there is no TV license fee.
