Pooter messing about

Last few days my computer has started messing about particularly with image handling - Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop both no longer load (clicking on them launches the windows installer program), I cant uninstall them as it looks for files that it cant find and if I try and reinstall I get errors telling me to uninstall first!!! Also right clicking on an image in explorer now takes a good 30 seconds to bring up the menu to allow me choose a different program to open it with.
Im running XP Pro and have got a load of programs running to protect my PC (AVG, Zone Alarm, HW firewall on router, Win Patrol etc). I have done a full virus scan and found nothing, ran AdAware and SpyBot and removed everything they found and rebooted but it still happens. I have had a look thru startup items and running processes and none of them seem to be untoward. I have tried to search on google but have no idea what phrases to use to describe whats happening!
Anyone got any ideas? Anyone seen it before?

any ideas how I can see what programs I have uninstalled or what the dll might be?
Thanks

Go back to a restore point before you deleted the file/program, then delete the file but don't click OK.

If the above 2 options don't work you could try installing Norton SystemWorks then click on it's "One Button Checkup". It might tell you what DLL file is missing. It worked for me when the same happened but I had Norton SystemWorks installed at the time, if it is a DLL file missing on your system then Norton SystemWorks installed afterwards might not pick it up?

I have tried the event log and it doesnt list the program, system restore was turned OFF (well done Jase....) and have tried a few programs which claim to diagnose DLL errors etc but none of them find any relevant ones missing!!!!

Jason, try going to tools in the help section, then disk clean up, this will give you the option to remove all unessary files/folders etc to free up disk space, it may be that you have to re-load some of the programmes again, but will have the effect of cleaning up your hard drive, worth a try..
Try recycle bin

See if the file is still in your Recycle Bin. There should be
an icon on the desktop.
If so you can restore it
