The next best thing to a firewall to keep spyware at bay is the likes of spyguard,spyblaster,IE-Spyad,easily found on the net at sites like

If you want to check and see if your computer is actually clean I'd download hijack this and post the log to a computer spyware forum like

Computer forums are always a worth perusing especially those using your operating system

Well, my paid-for Lavasoft spyware remover had a virus which shut it down everytime I wanted to scan. Pretty clever actually. I simply could not get rid of it, so I did the drastic thing and completely re-loaded Windows XP from scratch ( I was fucking angry at the time, you must understand ). I've just installed Norton anti-virus 2005 and it has its own spyware checker with its anti-virus ability and it seems to work fine.

I must admit though, I've never understood why 'they' cant keep viruses off our computers in one fell swoop. I think there's too much money to be made selling anti-virus software.

Sounds like you had the infamous CoolWWWsearch smart killer infection

Stops spyware removal programs dead in their tracks

Fortunately some kind soul has made a little program to remove it
