Been cleaning out my files, and came across 2 cleared cheques (yes, they returned them to you in those days free of charge) dated 1968,and made payable to SAMANTHA BOND and YVONNE PAUL,now our top agents, after them working for me.
For a half day's work in a studio in Tooley Street,?6/6/0 for Samantha. The other fee was for Yvonne at ?11/12/0 for a WHOLE DAYS work.Remember this was in the old coinage,?'s,shillings, and pence.
I shudder to think what this would be in today's terms.

Not cheap at all, the same in real terms as today, at that time my first round was three pints and the cost was 10/- or 0.50 pence

Technology has come down in price. When the first "amateur" video recorders appeared c. 1974, the Sony Portapak was about ?1000. That was a 1/2 inch reel to reel system, b&W.

My Olds bought one of the first VCRs $AUS1300-00 which in todays terms would equate to spending about $AUS5000-they got screwed well and proper price wise,as 2 years later it was a third of the price
Mind you its never broken down and has never been serviced unlike todays lemons...6 to 12 months and their cactus
cheers

Hi
Don't know how anyone else worked out the cost but in 1968 but a pound bought 4 packs of Bensons = ?18 or 40 mars bars= ?12-?16 . or 8 pints of lager = ?24.
Also the models mentioned had a nationally known name which meant that they charged between 3 and five times as much as the girls trying to build a portfolio or pay for a holiday, at least.

Converting Benson as an exchange method we get
one days work = 46.40 packets of Bensons
Todays Price is 4.60 X 46.40 = ?213.44

I don't know if its still true but it used to be claimed that the price of a Mars bar was a good measure of comparative price over time.
