Wi-Fi networks

Am I doing anything wrong by accessing the internet by using somebody elses unsecure Wi-Fi network?
Spent over an hour contributing via my laptop and somebody elses network today, then the shop owner came and asked me what I was using to connect, when I told him the network he wasn't too happy but I told him I wasn't doing anything wrong and he was at fault for having an unencrypted network, some conflict with Windows has stopped him encrypting so far.
Morally I may be wrong but am I legally?
